Kidnapped!
Sunday, September 28th, 2008
For Jackie’s 13th birthday party, we kidnapped her friends.
With a “pirate” theme in mind, Jackie selected 9 friends to kidnap. We arranged the time and pick-ups with their parents ahead of time. We started at one house, getting our first kidnap victim, then moved to the next house.
When we had about 4 girls, it got very fun as the girls would decend on the next house and kidnap the girl all together. All the girls were surprised but some girls were so surprised, it was quite comical. There was a lot of “What are you doing here?” as they looked their friends holding swords at them.
We drove them to our destination - a friend’s beach house south of Santa Cruz. The girls dressed for the beach. Due to the overcast day, they dressed in layers with a swimsuit underneath their sweatshirts and shorts. At the house Captain Jackie inspected her new crew.
She announced her treasure map was missing so we had to inspect the girls’ bags. She found the map among her crew. With map in hand, they followed the path to the beach. On the beach, they discovered the treasure chest. Inside the treasure chest were gold chocolate coins and a snack bag for each of the girls. They were apparently hungry cause they all yelled, “Food! Yes!”
Next, they played at the beach.
Some played in the waves, some participated in sword fighting and a few brave souls body surfed.
Afterwards, we headed back to the beach house. After changing clothes, the girls gathered around the table where Jackie opened her presents. With a “kidnapping” theme Jackie wasn’t sure if she would get an presents, but their parents had bought presents and hidden them in the girls bags. Each girl would say, “Open my present. I want to know what I got you!” The mother’s knew Jackie well enough to get her things like journals, bookstore gift cards and a reading light.
Dinner followed with pizza, watermelon, apples and Jackie’s requested lemon cheesecake.

Horses
Saturday, September 20th, 2008
The girls attended a week of summer horse camp.

Jackie overcame a fear…
Journaling:
Everyone knows that if you fall off a horse you must get back on that horse.
2007. While taking semi-private horseback riding lessons Jackie fell off a horse. She had been attempting to canter for the first time. When she fell she fractured her arm and ended up wearing a sling for several months. She did get back on that same horse but she quit her lessons with that instructor. A few months later she attended a summer horse camp and went through all the basics of horseback riding again, enjoying the experience.
2008. Jackie attended summer horse camp again and they placed her in the advanced class. Early in the class the teacher announced that they would learn to canter - the very move where she had fallen and fractured her arm. On the day of the canter lesson Jackie voiced her fears. “I am so scared my teeth are chattering.†she said. “That’s what happens to me when my I am scared - my teeth chatter.†I left her at the camp but I returned early to take pictures. And then it happened. They entered the ring for the canter lesson. If she was nervous or those teeth were chattering, I couldn’t tell. She watched as horse and rider pairs went ahead of her. It was her turn. She grabbed the reins and trotted her horse around the ring and then carefully following her instructors directions, she broke into a canter. It was done. She had overcome that fear and that memory.

and Jennifer dealt with her sadness at the end of camp.
Journaling:
Jennifer walked into the door, tears streaming down her face. She flopped on to the coach, sobbing. I turned to Jackie.
“What’s wrong with her?†I asked.
“She’s upset that horse camp is over.†Jackie said.
Ah, yes. I sighed. It was tough. Today was the last day of horse camp at Webb Ranch. Jennifer was taking it pretty hard as she often does when fun activities end.
She told me what upset her - she wouldn’t be seeing or riding “Buck†anymore.
We snuggled and tried to find some comfort.

The Drama
Tuesday, September 16th, 2008
Jennifer attended two weeks drama camp over the summer.
Journaling: Jennifer demonstrated her dramatic side during a two-week drama camp. The best skill she learned at the camp was how to correctly project her voice. She enjoyed demonstrating it for us.
The 29 students in the 2 week drama camp worked together to create a production of Dragon in the Winds. The students created the costumes and props, altered the script and made various modifications to make it their own unique production. All of that in two weeks? Yep. Then, they acted it out in the park in front of an audience. All of it came together wonderfully to make a great production.

Black Blog Day
Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Today I am featuring some of my favorite things in my life that are black.
First, how could I not mention my two favorite girls? Each of the girls played on sports teams that had predominately black uniforms. Jennifer played softball and Jackie played soccer.
The one black item that dominates my horizon everyday is my English Cocker Spaniel Arthur. He’s sweet and beautiful, but being black he’s often hard to photograph.
The fourth black item is the girl’s Hogwarts robes. They wear these to play games or to any Harry Potter party or event such as the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book release party at Kepler’s. I sewed both robes - one of my few sewing projects in the last few years.
